EU Citizens Trapped in Iran Refuse Evacuation - Want to Sample Local Cuisine

Among the several thousand EU citizens in Iran, there are also those who don't want to be evacuated because they still haven't finished getting acquainted with the local culture.

While Riga residents worry about whether Metro will find space for a second hypermarket, the situation of several thousand EU citizens in Iran has turned out to be much more complicated than initially thought. It turns out not everyone wants to be evacuated — many simply aren't ready to leave a country where they haven't yet tasted all the local dishes.

"I've been living here for ten years, and I also have Iranian citizenship. Why should I leave? I have my own little coffee shop here and regular customers," says Hannes from Tallinn, shaking his head in bewilderment at the EU's offered assistance. "Besides, apartment prices here aren't as expensive as in Riga."

The biggest complications have been caused by airspace closures, which have canceled flights. Now a much larger number of EU citizens are stranded in neighboring countries, waiting until they can return home. Some are already starting to plan extending their vacation.

"We activated the consular cooperation network," explains an EU official, adding that the exact number of evacuees is not being disclosed. Possibly because some have simply hidden in local markets and don't want to be found until they've bought all the souvenirs.
