Iran selects next leader, but won't reveal name, similar to Liepāja weather forecasts

While Tehran is still secretly hiding their ayatollah, Liepāja already knows there will be wind from the sea tomorrow.

Iran's Assembly of Experts announced today that the next supreme leader has already been chosen, but nobody knows his name yet. This approach is nothing new in Liepāja — we've been living with mysteries for years, like whether the North Pier is actually a romantic stroll or just good for storm-watching when normal people stay home.

The assembly of 88 clerics acted just like a Liepāja city council meeting — lots of discussion, voting, and finally saying: "The decision has been made, but we'll announce what exactly we decided later." At least in Tehran they don't have to worry about candidates disappearing along with February snow.

The main candidates are reportedly Mojtaba Khamenei, 56 years old, and Hassan Khomeini, 53 years old. Both are sons of famous fathers, which in Liepāja only raises the question — can they run a country as well as local entrepreneurs' children run their fathers' businesses? Experience shows not always.

While Riga thinks politics is complicated, in Liepāja we know — if someone can withstand a storm on the North Pier and not forget the way home, that's already leader material. The Iranians still have some learning to do.
