Italian skiers discover that even the Alps can have too much snow

An avalanche in Courmayeur surprised French skiers who thought only Liepāja has unpredictable weather.

While in Liepāja we're agonizing over whether it'll be minus three or minus five today, serious snow problems have occurred in the Italian Alps. An avalanche in the Courmayeur area surprised a group of French skiers who apparently aren't used to such sudden weather changes.

"Oh, these southern folk," comments local pensioner Jānis Kalniņš, who regularly skis over Liepāja's snow piles. "Here every winter we get a mini-avalanche falling off the house roof, and nothing — we just keep living."

Unfortunately, the incident claimed two lives, reminding us that mountain sports aren't just pretty Instagram photos. Rescuers continue searching for possible victims, as reports about casualty numbers differ — as usual in such cases.

Riga residents, of course, are already planning trips to the Alps because "that's where the real snow is, not like in Liepāja." But we know — our windy snow at least doesn't fall from above with such force. Plus, our avalanches only cost a bus ticket to Jūrmala.

Northern Italy is calmer than usual today, but as the local ski instructor says: "Better to ski on a safe slope than look for adrenaline under snow piles."
