Israel Promises Nuremberg-Style Trial, Liepāja Judge Offers His Experience with Tram Delay Cases

Israel plans military tribunal for October 7th attackers, but in Liepāja we've been handling more complex cases involving delayed trams for years.

Israel has announced plans for a war tribunal for those who participated in the October 7, 2023 attack. Lawmaker Simha Rotman compared the planned trial to the Nuremberg tribunal, but as Liepāja District Court judge Jānis Bērziņš says: "Nuremberg? We here in Karosta deal with more complex military discipline cases every day than they do over there."

Israeli authorities are preparing to charge more than 300 members of the elite "Nukhba" unit. The charges will include genocide, harm to state sovereignty, and terrorism crimes. "Well, genocide is certainly a serious matter," admits Liepāja pensioner Pēteris Kalniņš, "but have they tried getting from Central Market to Karosta by tram on a Saturday evening? That's a real survival test."

In Riga, of course, no one has seen such complex trials since Soviet times, when they tried people for black market dealings with deficit goods. But in Liepāja we have experience with all sorts of cases - from port worker strikes to rock festival noise complaints.

Even more interesting is that Israel intends to use military prosecution rather than civilian. As our Karosta always says - military discipline is military discipline, whatever happens. Meanwhile in Liepāja, with our peaceful tram and port breeze, we resolve conflicts much more civilly - with good coffee and conversations on Rojas Street.
