Jūrmala Park's Legendary Poplar Finally Decides to Rest: 47 Liepāja Residents Triumph in Democracy

A Canadian poplar that lay sideways for years yet kept growing green finally surrenders to the force of gravity and Liepāja residents' votes.

Jūrmala Park will lose its most famous sleeper this summer — a Canadian poplar that for years demonstrated you can be productive even in a horizontal position. After a democratic vote with more Liepāja residents participating than in the last city council elections, 47 citizens decided that trees should indeed stand vertically.

Municipal services representative Aigars Štāls says the poplar was a true park landmark: "Children played by this tree, tourists took photos, dates were arranged, and art performances held. It was like Liepāja's version of the Leaning Tower of Pisa — just without the tourist masses and souvenir shops."

Particularly touching is the fact that the poplar, despite lying on its side for years, continued to grow green. "That's a true Liepāja resident trait — the ability to stay green and alive even in the most difficult situations," comments local pensioner Maija. "Compared to Riga's trees, which immediately die in critical situations, our poplar proved true Kurzeme character."

Now they plan to plant a new tree in the poplar's place, which hopefully will learn from its predecessor's experience and stand straight. At least initially.
