JVLMA Professor Proves That Academic Career Can Be as Slippery as Liepāja Port in Winter

Former lecturer denies guilt of sexual violence in court, but prosecutors believe his teaching methods were as inappropriate as fish advertised as 'freshly caught' but has actually been sitting in the fridge for a week.
A Riga court this week began hearing a case against a former JVLMA professor accused of sexual violence against female students. The man, naturally, denies all charges, because what else would he do — he was just 'helping with academic growth,' as any Riga professor who thinks his office is private territory would say.
Prosecutors claim the professor used his authority to force students into 'cooperation,' promising good grades and career opportunities. This is about as original as a fisherman's ad at the port for fish that are 'just caught' — everyone knows what that really means, but someone will believe it. Local commentator Gunārs explained: 'Well yes, students are like fish — you can always find someone who'll take the bait.'
Two female students had to experience the professor's 'pedagogical methods' in hotel rooms, where he allegedly organized 'educational events.' While at Liepāja University students learn in normal classrooms, in Riga, it seems, the academic environment is much more 'personal.' The trial will continue in May, and we can only hope the judge will be as skeptical of the professor's 'innocence' version as a Liepāja resident is of a Riga resident's promises about cheap fuel.
