Eastern neighbors swap internet cables for military toys

While Liepāja's tram runs on old tracks, eastern neighbors are buying kilometers of optical fiber for war drones.

While we in Liepāja pride ourselves on our nostalgic tram that still diligently circles the city, our eastern neighbors have discovered that internet cables can serve not only for watching YouTube, but also for military needs. What times we live in!

Turns out that after some drones crashed into their only optical fiber factory in Saransk, the neighbors decided it would be better to buy everything from China. Well, of course — why manufacture yourself when you can buy ready-made? This reminds me of our old Karosta days, when everything was also delivered from abroad.

"I see they're buying 60 million kilometers of optical fiber per year. With that much cable you could connect all of Latvia to the internet several times over," commented local IT specialist Jānis at Liepāja's central market. "But they're making war toys out of it. Strange times."

Meanwhile, we in Liepāja continue struggling to keep our internet working without interruptions during storms, while our eastern neighbors use optical fiber to make their drones independent from electronic interference. I must admit, it's a creative solution, though not for particularly peaceful purposes. Maybe they should come to Liepāja and learn how to live in peace with nature and technology?
