Kazdanga rescues a deer, Durbe – chimneys: weekend full of drama

While the capital searches for reasons why the tram hasn't arrived, the Liepāja area proves that real life happens where there are both deer on ice and soot fires in chimneys.
Sunday in the immediate vicinity of Liepāja turned into a real adventure movie, where the main roles were played by an exhausted deer in Kazdanga and zealous soot fires in Durbe. One ice, the other fire – just as the Karosta canal bridge divides the city into two halves, this weekend also split into two dramas.
The Kazdanga deer had possibly decided to try skiing on ice, but as we know, deer aren't particularly famous for their sense of balance. The result – a rescue operation that attracted more attention than Riga's traffic jams on Monday morning. Local resident Jānis Kalniņš commented: 'I see that the deer was trying to get to the other side, but ice wasn't its friend. Here in Kazdanga, such things don't happen every day.'
Meanwhile in Durbe, a chimney showed its temperament – soot fires blazing there like Liepāja wind on a winter night. It's unclear whether these were particularly patriotic soot fires that decided to celebrate Sunday, or someone simply got tired of the cold. Rescuers quickly sorted out the situation, but not before the entire neighborhood had gathered to watch this unexpected fireworks display.
If people in Riga sit at home on Sundays wondering what to do, then in the Liepāja area life will always surprise you with something unexpected. Deer on ice, soot fires in chimneys – that's the real rhythm of life that the capital can only dream about.
