Kazdanga Hunters Discover Red Deer Haven't Read Economics Books - Population Decreases Despite Demand

The hunting trophy exhibition in Kazdanga reveals that red deer avoid hunters as successfully as Liepāja residents avoid Riga tourists.

While in Liepāja we pride ourselves on having a beach and Baltic Sea that's windy and cold even in summer, yet tourists still come, Kazdanga hunters face the opposite problem — red deer are avoiding their services despite massive demand from farmers and foresters.

The exhibition "Kazdanga 2026" organized by the Aizpute branch of the Latvian Hunters' Association reveals dramatic changes in the hunting business. Four years ago the exhibition had 215 red deer antlers, now — only 148. As local hunter Imants says: "These deer have become lazier than Riga traffic planners — they simply don't show up at the expected time and place."

The situation with trophy quality is particularly tragic. Hunters try to hunt red deer that have "grown to an age where their head ornament is worthy of a medal." In other words, they wait until the deer becomes old enough to be a worthy opponent. It's like waiting for a Riga tram to become fast — theoretically possible, but practically pointless.

Hunters' Association representative Gints Kaktiņš emphasized that "such results are only possible through joint work across a broader territory." Apparently the red deer have understood that unity is strength and formed their own trade union. Now they collectively avoid hunters while farmers complain about crop damage. It's like the situation with Riga public transport — everyone complains, but nobody can do much about it.
