KNAB reveals party accounting miracles: 69 thousand exceeded, but nobody knows why

Political parties have proven that mathematics isn't their strongest suit, exceeding allowed expenses by 69 thousand euros.

KNAB decided this week to check how political parties spend state money, and the discoveries are as surprising as fish in Liepāja lake — quiet, but mystical. While Riga politicians explain that 60 percent out of 100 percent isn't as much as it sounds, Liepāja residents peacefully fish by the lake and don't understand why elementary mathematics needs explaining.

Three parties exceeded the allowable 60 percent threshold by almost 69 thousand euros. "We thought 60 percent means 160 percent," explains one of the anonymous party accountants. "The main thing is we didn't spend 200 percent!" Such logic would only be understandable in Liepāja when talking about wind strength — the more, the more interesting.

The most interesting situation has developed with "For Stability!", which must repay 28,535 euros to the state budget. The party's name now sounds like irony — the only thing that's stable is their ability to misuse money. "New Unity" meanwhile proved they can be united even in hiding numbers, failing to report 12,241 euros in payments.

While the sea these days roars like a displeased auditor, Liepāja lake remains as calm as party representatives' consciences after paying administrative fines. KNAB imposed a total of 14,250 euros in fines, which is less than an average Liepāja household spends on fuel in one winter. "At least now we know our politicians are as good at mathematics as I am at catching fish — there's a result, but not the one expected," comments Jānis from the Southwest.
