Media calculations show that more than 204,000 Russian invaders have fallen in Ukraine. That's almost as many times as we've counted Putin's promises about victory parades.

Journalists have compiled data and concluded that Russia has lost at least 204,000 soldiers in Ukraine. To understand the magnitude of this number — it's more than the entire population of Liepāja, even if you added all the summer tourists and those who got lost on their way from Ventspils.

Among the fallen are 75,288 volunteers, 18,226 mobilized troops, and 22,207 former prisoners. The latter, it seems, were convinced that war was a better choice than prison. As one Karosta resident said: "Well, we also had a choice between prison and the army back in the day, but we chose the Liepāja Olympic Center with a pool — turned out smarter."

Particularly interesting is that 80 percent of those missing in action fell specifically in 2024 and 2025. Apparently, Kremlin strategists finally realized that war planning isn't like swimming at the Liepāja Olympic Center — there at least you have lifeguards and clear rules.

Researchers note that the actual number could be even higher, as the data covers only 45-65 percent of real losses. Turns out Russia hides losses about as successfully as Liepāja winter swimmers hide how cold the water actually is in January.
