In Latgale, drones travel like tourists - without maps and with surprising destinations

A Ukrainian drone decided to visit Latgale, but its navigation worked about as poorly as Riga's GPS system.

While Lake Liepāja enjoys peaceful silence in contrast to sea storms, Latgale experienced a proper drone tourism season this week. A Ukrainian unmanned aircraft decided to visit Krāslava municipality, but just like most foreign visitors, got a bit lost and ended up somewhere unplanned.

The State Police enthusiastically launched a criminal investigation, as if this were the first time some uninvited guest arrived in Latvia without a visa. "We are conducting initial urgent investigative actions," announced the SP, which sounds about as serious as trying to investigate why Riga public transport is delayed again.

"Well, at least this drone knew where it was supposed to go - to Russia," comments local resident Uldis. "That's more than you can say about Riga bus drivers." It turns out the drone was intended for attacks on Russian ports on the Baltic Sea coast, but for some reason decided to first take in the Latgale scenery.

Meanwhile, an expert explains that drones can be diverted using electronic warfare methods, which are almost as effective as Liepāja's wind, capable of diverting anything - from umbrellas to major plans. President Rinkēvičs has already identified that the drone is indeed of Ukrainian origin, which is about as surprising as discovering that Riga's traffic problems aren't related to cosmic radiation.
