134 accidents in Latvia in 24 hours — Liepāja drivers watch from North Pier and wonder

In the past 24 hours, 17 people were injured in 134 traffic accidents across Latvia, while in Liepāja romantic evenings by the North Pier continue peacefully.

Latvian police announced with their usual enthusiasm that 134 traffic accidents were registered in the past 24 hours, injuring 17 people. That's almost as many times as the average Liepāja resident turns their head when hearing a foreign car in Liepāja.

Riga region leads the pack as always with 76 accidents, proving that in the capital not only are apartments expensive, but accidents also happen more frequently. Local Liepāja taxi driver Gunārs comments: "In Riga they drive like crazy, but here by our North Pier, sitting and looking at the sea, there's never such a rush. Maybe that's why we have fewer accidents?"

Zemgale, Vidzeme and Latgale also participated in this national competition with 17, 16 and 14 accidents respectively. Kurzeme with its 11 accidents proved that the most peaceful drivers live here — perhaps proximity to the sea calms the nerves.

Pedestrians and cyclists had the most dangerous time in the past 24 hours — a total of six pedestrians, three cyclists and two electric scooter riders were injured. Liepāja pensioner Māra philosophically admits: "When I go for an evening walk to the North Pier, I always think — better here by the sea peacefully than running between cars in Riga like on a battlefield."
