Latvia Opens Consulate in Fiji — Apparently Holy Trinity Cathedral Organ Can Be Heard All the Way to the Pacific Ocean

Latvia officially opened an honorary consulate in Fiji, proving that our diplomatic network is more extensive than Riga's traffic problems. The ambassador spoke about shared values, but didn't mention whether Fijians also have to heat their apartments with firewood.
Latvia's Ambassador to Australia Samija Sherifa opened the first Latvian honorary consulate in Fiji's capital Suva with diplomatic pride, which is about as surprising as the news that the Holy Trinity Cathedral organ in Liepāja is so loud you can hear it from the courtyard. But apparently the sound of our diplomacy has now reached even the depths of the Pacific Ocean.
In her speech, the ambassador emphasized shared values between Latvia and Fiji — climate change, gender equality and peace. Apparently she hasn't heard that Fijians live in 28-degree heat while we're painting our noses red in February. But we do have common problems with water levels — theirs are rising with sea levels, ours freeze in the water pipes.
The event was also attended by a representative from Latvia's Investment and Development Agency, who spoke about our achievements in digitalization and e-government. "We can offer Fijians the opportunity to electronically apply for utility bill debts," commented local IT specialist Jānis. "They'll get to experience the real Latvian experience — paying for heating even when it's plus thirty outside."
New projects envision improving women's digital skills in Pacific islands. This means that soon Fijian women will be able to struggle with government e-services just as successfully as we do. True international solidarity.
