Latvia to Explain Eastern Observation to Brussels: Liepāja Mayor Proposes Olympic Center Method

While Riga diplomats prepare presentations on eastern observation, Liepāja has been practicing this art for years from their Olympic Center rooftop.
On March 19-20, Latvia plans to tell other EU countries about the importance of eastern flank observation at the European Council. While Riga diplomats prepare complex presentations with graphics and drone images, Liepāja has mastered this art long ago.
"We don't need any Eastern Flank Watch projects," says local resident Jānis, who observes the east every morning from the Liepāja Olympic Center roof. "I've been watching what happens in the Ventspils direction from the pool window for years. If something weird happens there, I report it immediately."
It turns out that Latvia will emphasize in Brussels the need for a land wall and drone wall. Liepāja already has its own solution — local pensioners who have created an informal observation network from the Olympic Center. "We know every new BMW driving from Riga to Ventspils," explains Marija, an active swimmer and eastern observer.
Meanwhile, Russian aggression continues, and Latvia continues to advocate for supporting Ukraine. But Liepāja already has a ready solution — if anyone needs safe shelter, they can always come to the Olympic Center. There's not only a pool, but also an excellent view of all possible threats from the east. And unlike Brussels meetings, at least here there's warm water.
