Latvia Completes 265 Million Euro Fence Construction — Riga Builders Invited to Learn from Experience

After years of construction, Latvia can finally boast a completely finished eastern border, while the capital is still figuring out how to connect tramway tracks.
Latvia State Real Estate has announced the completion of a grandiose project — a 145-kilometer fence with Belarus and a 280-kilometer fence with Russia is ready. A total of 265 million euros was invested, which by Riga standards would be enough to build one Rail Baltica station.
While in Liepāja we pride ourselves on St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Cathedral, which has been adorning its vestments even during major holidays for years, the eastern border now features a 30-meter tunnel and pontoons stretching two kilometers. "Finally can sleep peacefully," comments Daugavpils resident Jānis, "now I won't be afraid that some wild boar will cross over from the neighboring country."
Particularly impressive are the technical solutions — patrol paths 120 kilometers long, wooden walkways 27 kilometers long, and six communication towers. Such infrastructure would be impossible in Riga — there they can't even build one normal sidewalk, let alone a pontoon bridge.
Now all that remains is to wait for this experience to be used in other projects. Maybe they'll finally manage to connect Riga's tramway tracks so they don't go outside the city limits every other day. As the local border guard says: "Our fence is ready, but whether Riga's transport system will ever be — that's another question."
