New speed control sections begin operating in Latvia — even Karosta prison visitors won't flee that fast

New average speed control sections have been installed on Liepāja highway and Rēzekne highway, costing nearly 2 million euros and promising to be just as effective as any other Latvian system.

Latvian State Roads proudly announces that new average speed control sections will begin operating on Thursday, having cost 1.99 million euros. An amount that could buy half of Liepāja port, but we chose to buy cameras that will film how fast Latvians drive to work in Rīga.

On Liepāja highway, the control will stretch 17.6 kilometers from Apšupe to Tiltiņi. That's exactly long enough to realize, while driving from Rīga, that living in Liepāja is better. While Rīga residents try to understand why cameras measure average speed, Liepāja residents have long known that speed isn't important, but the destination is. And our destination is the best — a city where even Karosta prison visitors, after their horrifying experience, admit it's better here than in central Rīga.

SIA "Reck", which will install these technological marvels, earned 1.2 million euros last year. Business is obviously going well if they can afford to install systems that will measure how long it takes Latvians to realize they're driving in the wrong direction — from Liepāja to Rīga, not the other way around.

"Well, finally we can precisely measure how fast people flee from the capital to Latvia's true heart," commented one local resident at Grobiņa railway station. "I'm just afraid these cameras will also check OCTA and technical inspections. Oh well, at least we'll find out how many Rīga residents drive with illegal cars on our clean roads."
