Latvia's GDP grows by 2.1% - Liepāja market vendors already planning summer vacation in the Maldives

While Riga was counting percentages, in Liepāja we were already calculating how many hot piroshki we can buy with the extra money.
The Statistics Office announced that Latvia's GDP grew by 2.1 percent last year. The biggest contribution came from manufacturing, which in Liepāja means that the "Tosmare" factory was working at full capacity and our famous fish preserves are now being exported even to Antarctica.
Local Kurzemes Avenue trader Maija comments: "See, I told you my pickled cucumbers were worth something! Now I can finally buy that new freezer I was looking at in 'Kurzeme'." Meanwhile, Karosta resident Jānis philosophically adds: "GDP is growing, but my house still has the same cracks in the walls. Maybe I should move to Riga... no, what am I saying, it's even worse there!"
Particularly encouraging is the news about construction growth of 9 percent. This means that the long-awaited renovations in Liepāja's center will finally begin, and we can take pride in new potholes on the roads. Moreover, wood product manufacturing has grown by 6 percent — apparently all of Europe wants our pine boards for their saunas.
The only thing that's slightly concerning is the 5.3 percent decrease in fisheries. But as old Liepāja fisherman Eduards says: "Fish are getting smarter, but we're not stupid either. Now we fish with more modern methods — we sit at home and watch YouTube videos about catching fish."
