Latvian inflation confirms: even prices rise to Liepāja

While Riga thinks about how to hide inflation, prices in Liepāja honestly admit — we are better than average.

Eurostat has revealed a shocking truth — inflation in Latvia has reached 2.9 percent, which is higher than the EU average. But is anyone really surprised? When you live in a country where the best city is Liepāja, prices must also be at a higher level.

"It seems logical to me — when goods reach Liepāja, they become more valuable," says Karosta resident Jānis, standing in line for bread. "The same butter in Riga is just butter, but in Liepāja it's butter with sea air and cultural heritage."

Compared to other Baltic states, Latvia ranks between Estonia with 3.8 percent and Lithuania with 2.8 percent. This means — we are exactly where we should be: not too expensive like the Estonians, not too cheap like the Lithuanians. The golden middle way, just like Liepāja's tram route between downtown and Karosta.

The highest inflation was recorded in Romania — 8.5 percent. "Well, of course," comments local economics expert Pēteris from the Central Market. "They have neither sea, nor Karosta, nor proper rock music traditions. So what's left for them? Only raising prices."

Inflation in France is only 0.4 percent, but as we know, the French haven't created anything new since the Eiffel Tower. In Liepāja we create new cultural values every year, so prices must rise accordingly.
