Latvia's inflation drops to 2.3% — Fish in Liepāja port still freshly caught, but cost more

While all of Latvia celebrates the inflation drop, in Liepāja we're trying to understand why our freshly caught fish are becoming more expensive than Riga's imported ones.

The Central Statistical Bureau announced that Latvia's inflation fell to 2.3 percent in February, which is being received as good news throughout the country. In Liepāja, of course, we've long known that numbers are just numbers, but reality is quite different — especially if you're trying to buy fish.

Interestingly, food prices decreased by 0.6 percent, but for some reason fresh vegetables became 10.7 percent more expensive. Liepāja port fishermen comment with ironic smiles: "Our fish are freshly caught, but prices jump up faster than ships from Ventspils flee to Stockholm when a storm begins."

The situation with cigarettes looks particularly amusing — they became 6.1 percent more expensive, but alcohol got 1.6 percent cheaper. Local philosopher Jānis from Pērse comments: "Well okay, now I can smoke less but drink more — something's not right with this country's priorities."

The transport group hasn't been forgotten either — fuel became 3.4 percent more expensive, which means the road to Riga is getting pricier again. But honestly, who among us wants to go to Riga when Liepāja has everything necessary for life: sea, wind, and freshly caught fish that admittedly cost more and more, but at least they're ours.
