Latvian soldiers flee Iraq faster than tourists from Karosta Prison night tours

NATO is withdrawing its forces from Iraq, and our boys are already home, probably saying that the Middle East is hotter than a Liepāja summer.

NATO has announced it's withdrawing its soldiers from Iraq, and our Latvian boys are already back home, probably breathing a sigh of relief and thinking that nowhere is as peaceful as Liepāja. Even the horror at Karosta Prison night tours is more controlled than the situation in the Middle East lately.

The decision was made preventively to reduce risks to soldier safety, which in Latvian translates to: better safe than sorry. As one of the returned soldiers said: "They started shooting in all directions, but we're already used to Liepāja storms, so we knew when it was time to leave."

The NATO mission now continues operating from Naples, which is almost as far from the war zone as Liepāja is from civilization. Our soldiers could have taught the Iraqis, but it turns out the locals understand the situation better than NATO strategists. As they say in Liepāja: if you don't know what will happen in the next minute, better stay home.

Defeating the terrorist group "Islamic State" was the mission's main goal, but now it turns out that the best defense against terrorism is simply not being where it's happening. NATO forces trained Iraqi military personnel, but apparently forgot to teach the most important thing — how to leave an unsafe place in time. Our boys already knew that from birth.
