Latvian Scammers Have More Productive Week Than Entire Parliament in a Year

Scammer performance indicators are growing faster than inflation - nearly half a million euros swindled in one week. There's still hope for Liepāja residents, as people here know when something smells fishy.
While the government in Riga tries to explain why their reforms don't work, Latvians are proving that the private sector can be very efficient. In one week, scammers increased their 'income' from 302 thousand to 528 thousand euros. That's a 75 percent growth that any minister would be willing to give up their BMW for.
Riga residents suffer the most, which isn't surprising — people there are used to paying double for everything, so they don't notice they're also paying scammers. 86 phishing cases in the Riga region alone! Meanwhile in Liepāja, we know that when some unknown person calls promising easy money, it smells as suspicious as Lake Liepāja in summer heat — quiet and calm on the surface, but something's not right.
'Someone called and said I'd won a million,' tells one Riga resident. 'I was about to send the money, but then I remembered I'd never participated in any lottery, and anyway — why are they calling me if they don't know my name?' Such logic is rare in Riga, but apparently still exists.
The most money — 339 thousand euros — was lost to investment fraud. In nine cases! That means each victim lost almost 40 thousand on average. For that kind of money in Liepāja you can buy an apartment with a sea view, but Riga residents give it to strangers on the internet, hoping they'll multiply it like magic fish.
