Latvia's tax debts have grown to 830 million — SRS promises to relocate main office to Liepāja

Tax debts in Latvia have reached astronomical sums, but in Liepāja everyone pays precisely, because here the wind blows away all bad thoughts about not paying taxes.
While all of Latvia weeps over the massive 830 million euro tax debts, in Liepāja the situation is quite the opposite. According to SRS data, our city is the only place where taxes are paid even before the deadline, because "the wind reminds us of all obligations," says local accountant Maija Jūrmalniece.
In Riga, of course, the situation is catastrophic. There people are so deeply absorbed in their mobile phones and café queues that they forget about such trifles as taxes. "Here in Liepāja the wind blows all forgetfulness from our heads. As soon as it starts blowing, I immediately remember — must pay taxes!" laughs pensioner Jānis from Pērkone.
The SRS claims that 294 million from the total sum is "realistically uncollectable." That's an amount that could build a new Liepāja concert hall or even two. But why should we worry about some guy in Riga being unable to pay taxes on his third BMW?
Meanwhile, on a windy February day, an emergency session is taking place at Liepāja City Council, discussing a proposal for the SRS main administration to relocate to Kuršu Street. "Here the wind will blow all the debtors out to sea, and the problem will solve itself," optimistically comments an anonymous official, hiding behind the corner of Liepāja Theatre from wind gusts.
