Latvia's Tax Debts Reach Cosmic Heights — Enough to Buy All of Jūrmala Park

The State Revenue Service announces that total tax debts in Latvia amount to 823 million euros. While Riga counts billions, Liepāja residents have long known that with such money you could buy not only our beloved Jūrmala Park, but also all those ancient spruces.

The State Revenue Service has published statistics that make you wonder — have Latvia's residents forgotten that taxes aren't voluntary gifts to the state? Total tax debts at the beginning of March reached 823.888 million euros, which is so much money that you could buy all of Liepāja's Jūrmala Park along with all the ancient trees and bare pathways.

While Riga most likely perceives these figures as routine statistics, Liepāja residents are left wondering — how can there be so much debt money when we have trouble finding money even for the tram? It's particularly amusing that of this enormous sum, only 207 million is considered actually collectible. The rest is like the silence of our Jūrmala Park — beautiful, but practically unusable.

The best part of this report is that 294 million euros has been written off as uncollectable because the debtors have neither money nor property. This reminds us of a situation where someone borrows money for the Grīzupe bridge, but then it turns out they only own an old bicycle wheel.

Interestingly, in Riga these figures probably spark serious discussions about the economy, but in Liepāja we simply rejoice that in our city at least Jūrmala Park is debt-free — the ancient trees don't have credit cards, and the quiet walking zone has no obligations to the State Revenue Service.
