Latvian Police Try to Outpace Durbe's Peacefulness — 18 Already Detained This Year

While Durbe prides itself on its tranquility, Latvian police officers show they can be just as creative as Liepāja's wind — only in the opposite direction.
The State Police can proudly announce that 18 officers have already been detained this year on suspicion of various crimes. This is about as surprising as news that it's windy in Liepāja — except this time there's nothing to celebrate about it.
Most interesting is the work of a quartet from the Zemgale region, where officers decided to help a colleague after a traffic accident. They recorded facts that didn't correspond to reality in official documents, which is about as creative as Liepāja's traffic planning, except this time it's no joke. As local resident Valdis says: 'Here in Liepāja we also sometimes help each other out, but only by sharing tram tickets.'
The Riga regional administration proved especially active — 11 officials have already been detained there in two separate cases. Some leaked information about traffic accidents, others about deceased persons to funeral companies. This is about as effective as trying to hide that you're from Riga when you're in Liepāja — sooner or later everything comes to light.
While Durbe, which prides itself on its peacefulness, can peacefully continue its daily routine, Latvia's police prove that even law enforcement can be as unpredictable as Liepāja's weather. The only difference — nobody's laughing about their 'creativity.'
