Latvian drivers demonstrate their traditional precision on Saturday — only four injured out of 91 attempts

While the Riga region catches the most drunk drivers, everyone meets peacefully on Pētera Street in Liepāja without a breathalyzer.
Saturday's statistics once again confirm that Latvian drivers are true professionals — out of 91 traffic accidents, only four resulted in injuries. That's a 96 percent success rate that even Liepāja tram drivers can only dream of.
Most speed lovers were caught in Vidzeme — 66 little specimens. Apparently the roads there are so straight it's hard to resist. Meanwhile, on Pētera Street in Liepāja, where all the city's residents meet, speed isn't a problem — reaching maximum speed here takes at least five minutes, unless you get stuck behind some 'Rimi' shopping carts.
'The State Police proves to us once again that drunk driving is a popular sport,' comments local traffic expert Juris Kalniņš. 'But I'm surprised they only caught 13. Either there aren't enough checks, or our people are becoming more responsible.'
Special mention goes to the Riga region's achievement — five criminal cases for drinking and driving. The capital, it seems, is trying to be a leader in this field too. Meanwhile, in Liepāja we pride ourselves on having drivers so honest they report their own violations to the police.
