Latvian Firefighters Prove They're Better Than Liepāja Metalurgs' Defense - Extinguish 47 Stubble Fires in One Day

Yesterday proved that Latvian firefighters work with such intensity that even Liepāja Metalurgs' most fanatical supporters would be forced to admit - these guys really know how to handle fiery situations. While hockey players try to score with one puck, emergency service rescuers extinguished 47 stubble fires in one day. That's like a hat-trick every period!

In Daugavpils, stubble burned across five hectares - almost as large as Riga's city center ego, but much less toxic. Similarly, in Rēzekne and Augšdaugava regions, the stubble proved as fiery as discussions about tram routes in Liepāja city council. "We're not even afraid of power lines," says one firefighter. "We've faced much more dangerous opponents - like Liepāja drivers in December."

The most peculiar case was in Cēsis region, where rescuers pulled three people from a car that had driven off the road and ended up in a river. "At least these ones hadn't tried driving on tram tracks," comments a local police officer. "It's much easier to work in water than with Riga residents who don't know where to turn around."

In total, emergency services received 101 calls, 25 of which turned out to be false alarms. "People are afraid of everything - even when a neighbor lights their stove," says a dispatcher. "But we'd rather respond to one false alarm too many than miss a real problem. Because unlike some other services, we actually show up on site."
