Latvian rivers drop as slowly as lines at the market on Friday morning

The Daugava continues its indifferent water level standstill, while in Liepāja everyone has long since switched to the sea.
The Hydrometeorological Center reports with unusual enthusiasm that water levels in Latvian rivers continue to drop. There have been no significant changes in the Daugava in recent days, which is considered a sensation in Riga, but in Liepāja we call it a regular Thursday.
In the Aiviekste, the water level has dropped by a few centimeters, which is as dramatic an event as price drops at Liepāja market — where everything is fresher than in Riga and half as cheap. Local fisherman Valdis comments: "My boat's motor hasn't touched water for a week, but I'm not worried — the main thing is that the sea hasn't gone away yet."
In the Misa River, where high water levels previously persisted, the situation has begun changing faster than public opinion about Riga's public transport. Water temperature in the rivers is +2 to +5 degrees, which is almost as warm as Liepāja winter days without wind.
Meteorologists promise that rain is expected at times this week, but precipitation won't be sufficient to affect water levels. In Liepāja we receive such news with a smile — we already have the sea, and it's not going anywhere. As old Mirdza says: "As long as the Baltic Sea is here, we don't need to worry about any water levels."
