Icebreaker 'Varma' crew rescues two anglers who thought ice was as safe as Liepāja's tram

Near Plieņciems, two fishermen ended up on a drifting ice floe, but fortunately the Liepāja icebreaker crew didn't let them become sea nomads.
Saturday evening near Plieņciems, what all the grandmothers had long predicted happened: the ice cracked, and two brave fishermen were carried out to sea. But since we live in Latvia, not some distant Arctic sunset, rescuers were nearby.
The icebreaker 'Varma' crew, which apparently isn't just for show, found both sea travelers within five hours. 'The search operation was complicated,' admit port representatives, but we all know nothing's more complicated than finding a free spot at Liepāja's central market on Saturday morning.
'Well, we thought the ice was strong,' says local resident Pēteris, who wasn't on the ice but knows how to tell a story. 'But it turns out nature isn't as predictable as our tram – at least that runs on tracks.'
The rescued men were taken to Riga, because of course, when something serious happens, all roads lead to the capital. But the main thing is everyone's alive and well, and now they'll have something to tell their grandchildren about how they went on a sea cruise without a ticket.
