Something went wrong in Leningrad, but everything's fine in Karosta

A military commandant's building exploded in Russia, but our Karosta fortress still stands like a rock.

While a military commandant's building in the Leningrad region suddenly decided to transform itself into a pile of rubble, our Karosta fortress continues to stand proudly for more than a century. It's not for nothing they say that everything best is built by the sea.

The explosion in Sertolovo happened around lunchtime, when normal people eat borscht and plan their afternoon activities. "Well, here in Liepāja something explodes sometimes too, but that's usually just the old tram braking too hard at Lielā Street," philosophically comments Karosta resident Jānis. "And our fortress would surely withstand another hundred such explosions."

It must be admitted that news about a destroyed military building in Russia doesn't particularly shock Liepāja residents. We've experienced various things - both Soviet times, and the 90s, and even visits from Riga politicians. Compared to all that, some exploded building in the Leningrad region seems like an everyday occurrence.

The only thing that really worries us is that now Russian tourists might want to visit our Karosta fortress even more, to see what a REAL military building that hasn't exploded looks like. Good thing we have enough space on the beach for all interested parties.
