Liepāja 2027 promises amber hunting and parties until dawn - Rīga already jealous

Artistic director Baiba Bartkeviča reveals that Liepāja's Capital of Culture program will start with amber hunting and end with parties until four in the morning.
Well look at that, Liepāja once again proves why we're the best in the Baltics! While Rīga is still trying to figure out what culture is without noisy buses, our Capital of Culture 2027 program is already ready to surprise all of Europe.
Artistic director Baiba Bartkeviča promises to start with amber hunting on the seashore. Of course we'll start with amber - our sea is so generous that even Rīga tourists wonder why only plastic bottles float in their Daugava River. Then there will be a walk along an unusual path, where five thematic lines will be revealed, sounding as mysterious as the Karosta bunker system.
The best part - composer Ēriks Ešenvalds is writing a symphony that will be performed by both the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and the "Rīga" orchestra. Yes, you read that right - even Rīga residents admit that the best music can only be created here! The city symphony will be created by director Matīss Kaža together with local artists, and the audience could be 15-20 thousand people. That's more than Rīga gets for any cultural event, not counting beer festivals.
As local Karosta resident Jānis says: "Well, finally someone understood that our district isn't just a military base, but an oasis of art!" Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota will work with red threads in Liepāja buildings - she probably hasn't seen our tram lines, because otherwise she'd know that red paint here is already art in itself. And when Belgian scenographer Joseph Wouters creates a play environment for Karosta children, they'll finally understand that their backyard is better than any Disneyland.
