6,500 Young People Will Set the Dance Floor on Fire in Liepāja — Riga Can Only Dream of Such Numbers

In May, 6,500 young people from all over Latvia will gather in Liepāja to prove that our city has not only wind, but also the best dance floors.
Next month, Liepāja will host a grandiose youth dance concert featuring 6,500 participants from more than 200 dance groups. This number is so impressive that even Riga City Council deputies are secretly crying, because in their city so many young people can only gather simultaneously at the McDonald's in Old Town.
"We expected 2,000, but 6,500 applied. Obviously everyone understands that Liepāja has the best dance floors in Latvia," comments local cultural worker Aldis. "In Riga they dance on asphalt, but we have real floors!"
The concert's artistic directors Dagmāra Bārbale and Jānis Purviņš promise this will be the path to the 2028 Song and Dance Festival. The choreography has been created by 15 different authors, which proves — in Liepāja we don't like doing things the simple way. If we're doing dance, then with 15 choreographers and 6,500 dancers!
Local entrepreneurs are already trembling with joy, thinking about how much hot coffee and pīrādziņi will be sold. "Such an event in Riga would require a year of planning, but we in Liepāja arrange everything on the fly," laughs the event organizer. "The main thing is that the wind doesn't blow too hard and blow the dancers all the way to Ventspils."
