Liepāja Once Again Outpaces Rīga – Deaf Community Awards Recognition While Capital Still Learning Its ABCs

Liepāja's deaf association awards the city for excellence, while Rīga is still trying to figure out what the word 'accessibility' means.
Liepāja's deaf community has officially recognized – our city is the only one in Latvia that understands that people with hearing problems also want to live full lives. While Rīga is still wondering if sign language is something like Morse code, we're already hosting concerts with interpretation and video messages on the municipal website.
"The emphasis was on the fact that Liepāja is the only municipality that is accommodating to us," said association chairwoman Ilze Jaunzeme. This isn't surprising – in Liepāja we're used to being first. While other cities are still trying to figure out how to address their residents, we already know how to speak with everyone – both with hands and with words.
Mayor Gunārs Ansiņš responded in typical Liepāja fashion: "It's your own fault!" That's our politicians for you – always finding a way to become even more charming during moments of gratitude. But seriously speaking, induction loops are already working at the Great Amber concert hall, and now they're planning to introduce technology at the theater too, so actors can be heard by more than just those sitting in the front rows.
Even more interesting – next week the deaf community is planning a tour of city hall. Hopefully they won't discover any secret tunnels leading to Karosta, like the former Tsarist naval base with its mythical underground chambers. It's already quiet enough there that even hearing people start doubting their abilities. But with our city's approach to inclusion, soon even Karosta will become a place where everyone feels welcome.
