Liepāja Unveils Dutch Secret: How to Become Unbreakable with Juniper Berries

At the Interior Museum, locals learned to prepare miracle elixirs that have made the Dutch so successful in seafaring and tulip growing.
While Riga is still pondering whether to drink coffee with milk or without, Liepāja is already learning to make real Dutch health elixirs. At a workshop held at the Interior Museum, participants discovered how to become as resilient as Dutch sailors using juniper berries and other mysterious ingredients.
Vaira Kārkliņa, head of the nature study group "Skara," shared secret recipes that have historically made the Dutch so successful. Seven different elixirs, at least three of which sounded like something you could get at Liepāja Central Market if you asked the right way.
"I've long wondered why our sailors aren't as successful as the Dutch ones," says workshop attendee Maija. "Turns out, it's all about juniper berries and theriac. We've only been trying with 'Mežpils' lemonade."
Among those present were actual Dutch people, who were most likely amazed that their ancestors' secrets had made it to the Liepāja waterfront. But as we know, everything good eventually reaches Liepāja — even Dutch elixirs with muscatel wine.
Meanwhile, Riga is still trying to figure out what theriac is, but Liepāja residents are already experimenting with sea buckthorn and wondering if these elixirs couldn't also be factored into tram ticket price calculations.
