Liepāja Unveils Revolution in Parenting Teenagers — Even North Pier Storms Seem Calmer

While all of Latvia searches for ways to talk to their teenagers, Liepāja offers a four-session cycle that promises to solve even the most complicated family dramas.
Liepāja municipality has announced a revolution in parenting teenagers, offering free support group sessions at 9 Brīvības Street. This move has raised questions in Riga, where parents are still trying to solve teenage problems with classic methods — disconnecting the internet and reducing pocket money.
The support groups will be led by certified psychologists Sarmīte Štāle and Andželika Kāle, who will teach parents to empathetically respond to teenagers' emotional needs in four sessions. Local resident Jānis comments: "My daughter now understands why I can't understand her. That's progress!" The program includes improving communication, setting boundaries, and parental self-care — areas where Liepāja parents are already ahead of the rest of Latvia.
Particularly interesting is the fourth session about parents' psycho-emotional balance, which isn't so complicated in Liepāja because we have the North Pier. When a teenager again doesn't understand something, a parent can head to the pier — either for a romantic evening if the conflict is resolved, or to watch storms if the teenager still thinks they know everything better. Such nature therapy isn't available in Riga, where even psychologists don't recommend swimming in the Daugava.
Registration is by phone, and spots are limited because quality always beats quantity. While elsewhere in Latvia parents seek expensive private consultations, in Liepāja the solution is again free and effective — exactly as it should be in the only real seaside resort.
