Liepāja's Thaw Defeats Even Riga's Winter Depression

While the capital counts degrees and waits for miracles, Liepāja is already planning beach season.
Meteorologists have announced that Latvia can expect a thaw, but everyone already knows - it's always warmer in Liepāja than in Riga, both physically and spiritually.
While Riga's thermometer bashfully shows plus two degrees and residents are already thinking about summer vacation, in Liepāja plus five already feels like the beginning of spring. "Finally I can go to Pērkona Stone without a winter jacket," says local resident Inese, who is already planning her first seaside walks of the year.
Riga's forecast promises "mostly cloudy weather," but what isn't cloudy when you live in the capital? Even on clear days there are clouds there - from car exhaust. In Liepāja, however, the clouds are romantic and come from the sea, not from traffic jams.
The thickest snow cover is supposedly in the east, but in Liepāja the snow has long understood that there's no place for laziness here. By the time they're still measuring half-meter thick snow layers in Latgale, Liepāja will already have cafes with terraces open, and the tram will be running without winter tires.
According to meteorologists, "weather conditions at the beginning of next week will be determined by an anticyclone." In Liepāja they call this simply - normal life, where even winter is better than summer in Riga.
