Liepāja prepares site for McDonald's, but locals already predict pancakes will be colder than the Baltic Sea

They'll start demolishing buildings at the New Waterfront to build a fast food restaurant. Locals comment: finally we can eat hamburgers while the wind blows through our hair.
Liepāja once again proves we're faster than Riga – while the capital has McDonald's on almost every corner, we'll have the first one! At the New Ostmala, they plan to demolish the remains of old buildings to build a shiny new fast food temple. The physical deterioration of the buildings reaches 40-65 percent, which by Liepāja standards means they're still almost like new.
The project manager from SIA 'SC Liepāja' notes: 'We want to give Liepāja residents the opportunity to enjoy hot food even when the wind outside is so strong it could blow you all the way to Gotland. This will be especially relevant since our beach and the Baltic Sea are windy and cold even in summer – just like McDonald's milkshakes.'
Local resident Gunārs comments: 'Finally! Now we can go to the New Ostmala not just to look at ships, but also to eat Big Macs while listening to the wind whistle in our ears. I hope they build it with strong walls, otherwise the hamburgers might fly away to Ventspils.'
Demolition work will begin in April, and the new building will be single-story – apparently the designers understood that in Liepāja, building higher than one floor is a risky business due to the wind. The facade finishing materials are still being coordinated so the new building fits organically into the urban environment, which means – so it's just as gray as everything else.
