Liepāja Gets Its First Official Pet Cemetery — Apparently Liepāja Museum Didn't Have Enough History

LLC "A-Land" will build Liepāja a pet cemetery for 53 thousand euros, because apparently the city lacked places to bury memories of a deceased cat.
Liepāja City Council, with the same seriousness with which Liepāja Museum preserves history that is actually interesting, has decided that the city urgently needs an official pet cemetery. LLC "A-Land" has undertaken this important task for 52,942.65 euros including VAT, which is about as expensive as a regular apartment without a balcony costs in Riga.
There was no shortage of bidders — five companies competed for the opportunity to build a place where Liepāja residents can bid a dignified farewell to their beloved pets. As local resident Gunārs explains: "Finally we'll be able to bury our cat with proper ceremonies, instead of just taking it to North Kurzeme and hoping the birds won't notice anything."
The cemetery will be managed by the municipal agency "Employment Projects," whose director Vairis Šalms notes that the funds are included in the city's development budget. This means that while Riga is thinking about tram lines to Ķekava municipality, Liepāja is already planning a future where even dogs will receive a dignified farewell.
Construction will begin this year, and soon Liepāja will become the first Latvian city with an official pet cemetery. This is almost as historically significant as the moment when the city decided that wind isn't always the enemy.
