Liepāja becomes Europe's hydrogen capital: two companies sign memorandum heavier than the Olympic Center pool water

CIS Liepaja and NorSAF have agreed to produce green hydrogen and aviation fuel, proving that Liepāja can be greener than Riga's parks.
While Riga is still trying to figure out what green hydrogen is and whether it can be poured into a gas tank, Liepāja has already signed memorandums for 550 million euro investments. "CIS Liepaja" and "NorSAF" decided to jointly develop hydrogen and aviation fuel production, because apparently our city doesn't have enough factories.
As local chemist Gunārs from Karosta explained: "I think it's something like the Olympic Center pool, except instead of water there will be hydrogen, and instead of swimmers — aviation fuel." Indeed, the logic is ironclad — if we already have a pool with water, why couldn't we have a factory with hydrogen?
By 2030, Liepāja plans to produce 21,200 tons of green hydrogen annually, which is roughly the same amount as Riga produces of hot air in political debates. Part of this hydrogen will be exported to Germany, proving that we can be useful not only as a transit port, but also as a chemistry laboratory.
Most interestingly, aviation fuel will be produced from green hydrogen, which means airplanes will be able to fly with a clear conscience. As a "NorSAF" representative said: "Our goal is to make aviation so green that even Liepāja's park will be jealous." Well, if that's not progress, then what is?
