Liepāja Requests Additional 850 Thousand So Water Won't Flood In Before 2027

The municipality reveals that the flood prevention project will cost a million more than planned, but promises it could actually cost even more.
The city of Liepāja has officially announced that implementing flood prevention measures requires an additional 850 thousand euros, as it turns out that stopping water is more expensive than expected. As the municipality explains, the initial plan for 2.55 million was slightly optimistic, much like the weather forecast at the beginning of summer.
"We discovered that inflation affects not only pasta prices, but also flood prevention construction," explains one of the project designers. "Plus, we can only start construction work in 2027, which means that by then prices will have risen by another half million. Or a million. Or two. We'll know for sure after the procurement."
Interestingly, a similar project in Riga would cost three times more and be delayed until 2035. Here Liepāja again proves its efficiency - we at least honestly admit we don't know how much it will cost, while the capital still thinks they have money.
The best news about the project is that 1,247 Liepāja residents will be protected from floods, and 1.5 kilometers of coastline will be reinforced. The worst news - this is only a provisional calculation, and the actual costs will be known after it's too late to change anything. Classic Liepāja approach: first we do, then we calculate, then we wonder.
