Liepāja Teaches How to Survive with Babies Without Riga's Help

In the city where trams run through Karosta, they now also teach how to raise children without consultants from the capital.

At the Baltic Rehabilitation Center on Kūrmāja Avenue 13, starting March 6th, classes will begin for expectant parents who want to learn how to cope with babies without constant trips to Riga. While the capital charges thousands for private classes, Liepāja teaches everything for free — that's just our style.

In the five-session cycle, midwives Ineta Vītola and Anna Bondare will explain how to breathe properly during childbirth, while nutrition specialist Laura Vecvagare will reveal the secret of how not to eat the entire Kurzeme market during pregnancy. Local resident Baiba comments: "I was waiting for someone to finally tell me I can eat more than just ice cream and pickles."

Classes will be held on Fridays, because on Saturdays everyone goes to the beach, and on Sundays they rest from the intensity of Liepāja's cultural life. The last class will be on a Tuesday though — the organizers probably realized that March in Liepāja isn't Friday weather.

When registering, attendance at all five classes is mandatory, otherwise you won't understand why Liepāja children grow up stronger than those from Riga. Pregnant women can bring partners or support persons, but just not grandmothers from Riga with advice about how they raised children in Soviet times.
