Liepāja Teaches How to Organize Events Where You Don't Forget to Invite Spectators

The foundation 'Foundation Liepāja 2027' offers courses for cultural workers, as it turns out that organizing events is more complicated than predicting sea waves.

Liepāja's cultural elite finally gets the chance to learn what seemed obvious to many — how to organize an event where not only artists perform, but spectators actually show up.

The foundation 'Foundation Liepāja 2027' (yes, that's what they call themselves — with a double foundation, because one isn't official enough) in collaboration with RTU Liepāja Academy has launched a lifelong learning program '5 Steps to a Good Event'. As local cultural worker Guntis says: 'Finally someone will tell us why only three people attended our last concert, and one of them was the janitor.'

The program will start on March 20th with a lecture 'From Idea to Event', led by Marta Selecka. People from Riga are already laughing that they learn such things at university, but we Liepāja folks know — we need practical advice on how to survive storms both literally and figuratively. 'In Riga they think the biggest problem with events is parking spaces. For us — it's how to keep the tent standing,' comments organizer Baiba.

The most interesting seems to be the session on inclusive culture on April 10th. Finally someone will tell us how to make events accessible to everyone, not just those who can guess that the concert is happening 'where everyone knows'. The fee — 270 euros for the whole course. Expensive? Yes. But compared to what it costs to organize an event where nobody shows up, it's practically free.
