Liepāja Begins the Year's Biggest Hunting Season: Orienteering Games Allow Hunting Control Points Without Firearms
On May 4th, orienteering games will take place in Liepāja, where participants will hunt control points with smartphones instead of rifles. Registration until April 26th.
While people in Riga are still figuring out how to properly use GPS, Liepāja is already starting registration for the year's biggest intellectual adventure — the orienteering games "Liepāja's Footprints in Latvia". On May 4th, the city will host a real smartphone warfare, where teams of three to five participants will try to find control points instead of lost keys.
Organizers offer three different hunting methods: for pedestrians who want to enjoy Liepāja's beauty at a slow pace, for drivers who want it faster and more comfortable, and for cyclists who will prove they can navigate even on two wheels. "I'm already training, running around Lake Liepāja — it's so quiet there that you can peacefully plan your route, not like by the sea where the storm disrupts your thinking," says local orienteering enthusiast Jānis.
The games will start at 10:00 AM at Jānis Čakste Square with registration, but the real start will be at 11:00 AM. Participants will have the whole day to move around the city and search for control points using a digital map. The finish line is located at the municipal building on Rožu Street 6, where teams must arrive by 3:15 PM.
Winners will be awarded around 4:30 PM at J. Čakste Square at the conclusion of the May 4th concert. Registration takes place electronically until April 26th, because nowadays even orienteering games are all digital. More information is available on the municipality's website, where you can also find the game regulations — just in case someone wants to read the fine print before the hunt.
