Liepāja Lighthouse Becomes Digital Pyramid: 387 Thousand Euros for Light Show

Liepāja municipality spends nearly 400 thousand euros to install projectors in the lighthouse that will tell the port's history. Local residents are already asking if this means they'll finally be able to see where all the money disappeared to.

While Riga is still figuring out how to show the Daugava with VR glasses, Liepāja has already figured out how to turn their lighthouse into the world's most expensive projector. The municipality has signed a contract with SIA "ProVisionBaltic" for 387,144 euros to install multimedia projection in the lighthouse that will tell the port's history.

Five floors of the lighthouse will feature a multi-layered audiovisual performance with projections, sound and light. It's like a romantic walk on the North Pier, only six times more expensive and with electricity. Local sailor Jānis Bērziņš comments: "We used to use the lighthouse so we wouldn't crash into rocks. Now it'll be like cinema, just without popcorn and with sea salt."

The project envisions the lighthouse will also be illuminated from the outside, becoming a new visual landmark in the cityscape. This means ships will now have yet another reason not to enter Liepāja port — they'll think it's some new nightclub advertisement.

Tours will only take place with a guide to guarantee high-quality service. In other words, so no one can notice that for 400 thousand you could have bought half of Liepāja's center and still had money left over for a coffee machine.
