Liepāja Basketball Players Prove They Can Win Even Without Help from Riga Coaches
In the semifinals, four teams proved that in Liepāja, basketball is more important than weather forecasts.
While basketball fans in Riga are still trying to figure out why their teams lose even at home, Liepāja hosted semifinal games where everything went as expected — those who could shoot the ball into the basket won.
The "Nīca/BLi" team continues to be as unstoppable as our winter storms, crushing "LSSS U19" 96:60. Roberts Krastiņš demonstrated the so-called "triple-double" — 12 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists. "It's like the Liepāja Museum — history that's actually interesting, except here it's happening live," comments local fan Gunārs. "Grobiņas Vikings" meanwhile proved that something good can come from Grobiņa too, beating "ODS" 102:84, thanks to Nils Biģelis's 35 points.
In the second division, "Liepājas Papīrs" showed that not only news can be printed on paper, but opponents too — "Fēnikss" received a 74:58 beating. Kristaps Miglinieks with his 29 points proved he can handle balls as skillfully as paper. "Vērgale/VIA-S" meanwhile defeated "Gaviezi" 69:55, although the name sounds like some technical equipment from Soviet times.
"Basketball is serious business here," says local expert Valdis. "In Riga they think basketball is just a business matter, but we play with heart. And with the wind at our backs, of course." The finals are expected in March, when it will be clear which of these champions will earn the honor of representing Liepāja in further battles against the capital's aromantic basketball.
