Liepāja Volunteers Receive Awards for Doing What People in Riga Won't Do Even for Money

The municipality honors 14 people who help others for free, while in the capital nobody does anything even when paid.

Liepāja municipality solemnly honored volunteers and NGOs who proved that in our city, people can still do good without payment. Such an event wouldn't happen in Riga, because there even for money nobody does anything.

Among the award recipients, the association "VeloRonis" particularly stands out - a winter swimming and cycling activist club that has combined two extreme sports. "Either I'm sliding on ice or slipping through water," admits club representative Guntars. "But the main thing is that you don't have to go to Riga to feel alive."

Dainis Ozols, met at the tram stop by Karosta market, comments: "I've long wanted to do something for society's benefit. In Riga you'd have to pay taxes on volunteer work, but here you can simply help." He has been helping in social work for years, proving that in Liepāja solidarity isn't just a word.

Special mention goes to Helvijs Vičivskis - a physics teacher who dedicates his free time to technology projects. "Children need to learn that technology isn't just TikTok," he explains. "Plus, here you don't have to stand in traffic jams like in Riga, so there's time left for other things."

The event also distributed sympathy prizes - apparently the organizers understood that there aren't enough official awards for everyone. But the main thing is that Liepāja still has people who do good without compensation - unlike the capital, where even paid work is done poorly.
