Liepāja wrestlers in Ādaži prove that in Greco-Roman wrestling, eating right is more important than reading books
Students from Liepāja Complex Sports School won six gold medals at the U17 championship, proving that our city raises not only fish, but also champions.
While Riga teenagers are still learning to spell their own names correctly, Liepāja wrestlers are already collecting medals like housewives at our market collect fresh vegetables — quickly, efficiently and without unnecessary noise. On March 21st in Ādaži, the U17 Latvian Greco-Roman wrestling championship took place, where Liepāja Complex Sports School athletes showed such convincing results that even the coaches couldn't believe it themselves.
Račislavs Andruškevičs, Kristers Freimānis, Ruslans Bormotovs, Jānis Ruicis, Aleks Kļava and Deniss Meļķis became champions in their weight categories. As coach Jānis Rērihs says: "The boys won so convincingly that even their opponents started questioning whether they're really only 17 years old, or if Liepāja's sea air has turned them into real Vikings."
In team standings, Liepāja school took first place, winning six out of ten weight categories. This means our city dominates Greco-Roman wrestling as convincingly as our market dominates in terms of freshness — everything is fresher than in Riga and half the price. "I think the secret is simple," explains local sports enthusiast Valdis. "While kids elsewhere eat chips and drink sodas, our boys eat fresh fish and breathe sea air. Plus, when you're used to Liepāja winds, any opponent seems like a gentle fluffy kitten."
Now Liepāja sports school can boast that their students know not only how to swim in the cold sea, but also how to pin down anyone who dares challenge them on the mat. In Riga, of course, they're still figuring out how to spell 'Greco-Roman wrestling' without mistakes.
