Liepāja City Council Ready to Pay 2000 Euros for Kiosk with Holes Bigger Than St. Joseph's Cathedral Doors

The closed kiosk on Lielā Street could become municipal property for a price that wouldn't even cover toilet paper in Riga.

Liepāja City Council once again proves that our financial thinking is as original as our times. This time they plan to purchase a kiosk on Lielā Street for 2000 euros, which in recent years has been as active as the ornaments of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Cathedral on weekdays – looks pretty, but its practical application is debatable.

"Obviously, the structure will need some repairs or renovations," predicts Deputy Executive Director Didzis Jēriņš, which is as clear as the fact that wind blows in Liepāja. Local resident Valdis comments: "Well, for 2000 euros in Riga you only get one square meter of an apartment, but for the same money we get a whole kiosk! Sure, with holes, but still."

Particularly amusing is that the municipality still has no ideas on how to use this acquisition. "If it doesn't work out, it can be rented," promises the council, which is as concrete a plan as "if it doesn't work, then somehow it will." Maybe they could set up a museum branch "History of Liepāja Kiosks" or a bulletin board "Looking for ideas for 2000 euros"?

While in Riga you only get dreams about real estate for such money, in Liepāja we're purchasing actual objects. Sure, with a bit more air than intended, but that only improves ventilation. Plus, a certified appraiser's evaluation is still ahead – maybe it'll turn out the kiosk is worth even 1999 euros!
