Liepāja E-Scooter Riders Set New Record — Nine Casualties in Just Three Months

While University of Liepāja students study physics and chemistry, e-scooter riders practice the laws of gravity on their own skin.

The first three months of this year in Latvia have been particularly creative for e-scooter riders — nine of them have already proven that the laws of gravity work on two wheels as well. Last year there were 219 such experiments, showing that our compatriots' scientific research into asphalt as the softest surface continues.

Police have revealed that the most common reasons for such research endeavors are riding under the influence of alcohol, riding two people on one scooter, and performing ill-conceived maneuvers. It seems our e-scooter enthusiasts consider these vehicles to be small trams, just without tracks and common sense.

While University of Liepāja students spend their academic years mastering complex sciences, e-scooter riders practice physics in real life. They study how fast one can fall from a vehicle traveling 25 kilometers per hour, and whether two people on one wheel truly create double the gravitational force.

As emergency services note, the decisive factor for safe riding is the ability to control the vehicle. This is about as complicated as controlling oneself in Liepāja's wind, just with less dramatic backdrop and greater trauma. At least the asphalt doesn't blow back.
