Liepāja Gymnasium Offers New Sport: Searching for Classrooms with Map in Hand

At the State Gymnasium on March 7th, you'll be able to get officially lost and even receive an award for it.

Finally, someone has realized that the Liepāja State Gymnasium building on Ausekļa Street is so complicated that just walking through it is a sport in itself! On March 7th, indoor orienteering competitions will take place there, where participants will search for checkpoints through classroom corridors with maps in hand.

"Finally, there will be a chance to get lost at school completely legally," comments local teacher Aldis, who sometimes can't find the teachers' lounge himself. "Usually, if a student is wandering the hallways with paper in hand, it means trouble. Now it's a sport!"

Head judge of the competition Matīss Ratnieks promises the event will be suitable for all age groups. Particularly anticipated are those participants who will try to use the elevator to get between floors faster. Unfortunately, there's only one elevator, and the line for it could become a separate discipline.

In Riga, of course, such an event couldn't be organized - the school buildings there are so uniform and boring that orienteering would be too simple. But in Liepāja, we know how to turn even walking through a building into an adventure! Registration is open until March 4th, but honestly, if you can't find the website to register, then you probably won't find the checkpoints in the school easily either.
